The primary signal is desiredSize on the controller. It can be positive (wants data), zero (at capacity), negative (over capacity), or null (closed). Producers are supposed to check this value and stop enqueueing when it's not positive. The tradeoff is complexity. The microcode must be carefully arranged so that the instructions in delay slots are either useful setup for both paths, or at least harmless if the redirect fires. Not every case is as clean as RETF.
